Bibim Bap...and Bye Bye

Dawn was craving Korean food since it'd been two years (or more) since she'd had it...it's not the kind of thing they have on every corner in Winston-Salem! For me, I hadn't had Korean food since Dawn cooked it for me in college.

It being her LAST DAY here, we had this one last restaurant to cross off our list. (Yes, we've eaten well--maybe too well--since Dawn got here: sushi, pho, Thai, Indian, and now Korean.)

After spending the afternoon driving around some of the notable Seattle neighborhoods--really just as an excuse to get out of the house on Dawn's last day here because it was a gorgeous, sunny, clear day--we hit the Korean BBQ restaurant. Mmmm.

Our waitress rolled up a cart with our order, including 10 different banchan,
or small side dishes.

Merrit surveys the banchan: kimchi, bean sprouts,
fermented beans, grilled greens, pickled turnips, and more.

Dawn suggested that we order bibim bap, which is basically a cold noodle
dish with lots of vegetables and a lightly fried egg. I'm a beginner to
bibim bap, so Dawn talked me through how to stir it all together and mix
in the right amount of spicy bean paste. She also got some kind of spicy
noodle soup--can't remember what it was called. But it was yummy.

This is bulgogi. Ok, I lied, I have had Korean food since college...because
I know I've eaten bulgogi once or twice since then. But THIS was the
best I've ever had. Mike will love this! I'm totally bringing him back here.

After we ate, we headed back to the house, tried to take a nap (no luck...kids!), and just sort of hung out while Dawn packed her suitcase, showered, and got ready for her flight: The red-eye back to NC. We dropped her off at the airport at about 10:00 for her 11:40 flight. Update: As of this morning, she's safe and sound in NC now. :)

Well, Donger, we sure did have a great time. The late nights, the laughs, the "that's what she said" jokes, the goofy texting, the trip to the San Juan Islands, the great meals out, the workouts, how many times you say "TWO" once you're paying attention, and all the new memories.

What a treat to get to spend almost three weeks with your oldest friend? Who gets that kind of time together? We realized that not since we roomed together during our junior year had we spent that kind of time together, but it was comfortable, relaxed, and totally fun, right girl? :) Love ya! Let's do it again this summer!

  1. This is the song I learned to sing in Girl Scouts back in the middle of the last century:

    "Make new friends,
    But keep the old.
    One is silver,
    And the other gold."

You have lots of silver, and lots of gold, as well. Dawn is surely solid 14 carat!
